DOCUMENTATION - CONVERSATION

INTERARCHIVE (on the path to a Meta-Database)
Media art works represent an alternative history of artistic practice, but because of their ephemeral, technical, or otherwise variable natures, they also present significant obstacles to accurate document-ation and access. Description of and access to art works promote new scholarship and artistic production, but lack of access has meant that media art and related histories are rarely included in the mainstream canon of college art classes and textbooks. In recent years online databases such as the Database of Virtual Art or Media Art Net have provided new venues for access. Nevertheless, even open databases are not as accessible as they could be, for there currently exists no search engine that can search across these databases, nor is there an obvious way for individual creators and academics who aren't affiliated with these systems to contribute to them. The Interarchive working group is exploring an exciting paradigm that would let individual artists publish rich citations for their work on their own Web sites, and then those data could be harvested by museums and search engines using a point-to-point self-publishing model. This data would be inter-archived and shared between artists, scholars, museums, and the public; accessible to all from the point of origin. The interarchive group will discuss, explore, and test this model by adapting existing web technologies. The group will be develop-ing a solution for near-term implementation. Discussion may range from the philosophical to the technical. Anyone is free to join, to observe, and especially, to participate.
