Johannes Goebel is the founding director of EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, USA, since 2002. He is professor at Rensselaer with appointments in the Arts Department and in the School of Architecture. As first department head at ZKM Karlsruhe, he was the founding director of the Institute for Music and Acoustics between 1990 and 2002. In 1989 he curated and organized the first MultiMediale festival for ZKM. In 1988 he wrote an expertise for the city of Karlsruhe, defining parameters for the future artistic program, building and operation of ZKM. He was largely responsible for the planning and construction of ZKM’s building. He started with “computer music” in 1977 at CCRMA, Stanford University, of which he was also co-director for a little while in the 90’s, produced “digital music digital” as first CD series ever dedicated to such music, and guided IDEAMA, the International Digital Electronic Music Archive, from inception to completion between 1988 and 1996.
